How it works

  1. The message

    It looks official: delivery company, tax office, toll road, your bank.2

  2. The link

    It opens a copy of a real website.1

  3. The theft

    You type card details or passwords. They can be used within minutes, or to call you back as “your bank”.

How AI makes it worse

Criminals use AI to mass-produce convincing messages. Spelling mistakes are no longer a reliable sign.3

Warning signs

  • A small payment to “release” a parcel.
  • Threats: “final notice”, “account blocked”.
  • A web address that is almost, but not quite, right.

Protect yourself

  • Don’t click. Open the official app or website yourself.
  • Report scam texts: see the numbers for your country below.
  • Turn on two-step verification for email and banking.
