They ask you to install an app so they can “fix” it.

They charge for fake repairs, or “find” a problem with your bank account.
What the evidence says
- Tech and customer support scams were the third costliest type of cyber-enabled fraud reported to the FBI in 2025.1
Warning signs
- A phone number inside a pop-up warning.
- Someone asks you to install remote-control software.
Protect yourself
- Real companies do not put phone numbers in pop-ups. Close the browser or restart.
- Never give remote access to someone who contacted you.
